Six organizations working to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS will get $1.3 million in new funding from the New York Community Trust, according to a recent announcement.

The grants will be distributed through the organization's New York City AIDS fund, which will dole out the funds to the following nonprofits: the Red Hook Initiative, which will receive $75,000 to help fight fight HIV in Brooklyn; the Muslim Women's Institute for Research and Development, which will receive $35,000 to open up an HIV-testing center; the Asian and Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS, which got $50,000 to help health centers become federally qualified; and the African Services Committee, which received $50,000, to help teach recent immigrants about HIV-support and prevention, among others.

"Research shows that people living with AIDS taking medications to control their illness are far less likely to spread HIV," said the AIDS Fund chairman Len McNally.

The New York Community Trust made other headlines earlier this year when it announced its first round of 2011 grants. In February, the nonprofit approved $3.86 million in grants to 30 charity organizations.
